What Is Your AI Problem?

Teachers Are Rewriting Their Courses. The Reason Matters More Than the Rewrite.

Teachers across the country are rewriting their courses.

English teachers are among the most visible examples. They are moving essays back into the classroom, reducing take-home assignments, redesigning assessments, and creating more opportunities to observe student thinking as it happens. Similar changes are taking place in science classrooms, social studies departments, and elective courses as educators reconsider assignments that have been part of their practice for years.

At first glance, these changes appear to be a response to AI.

They are, but not in the way many people assume.

The real issue is not the technology itself. The real issue is that many of the assumptions schools have relied on for decades to demonstrate learning no longer feel as reliable as they once did.

For years, educators could assign work, review the final product, and make reasonable judgments about what a student knew and could do. The assignment was never the entire story, but it provided enough evidence to support instructional decisions, grading practices, and conversations about student progress.

Today, many teachers no longer feel that confidence.

As a result, they are redesigning courses to create more opportunities to see learning unfold in real time. They are building in checkpoints, increasing in-class work, asking students to explain their thinking, and creating assignments that reveal process rather than simply evaluating a final product.

The hidden shift is that schools are moving from evaluating completed work to seeking greater visibility into student thinking.

This may sound like a small adjustment, but it changes far more than assessment.

An English teacher asks students to complete portions of an essay during class because the final paper no longer provides enough evidence of how the ideas developed.

A science teacher spends more time listening to students explain their reasoning during lab investigations because the finished report tells only part of the story.

A social studies teacher redesigns a research project so students must defend their conclusions and explain how they evaluated sources before arriving at their final position.

A counselor notices that student reflections sound increasingly polished, yet reveal less about what students are genuinely struggling with or trying to understand.

Across schools, educators are creating new ways to make thinking visible.

Why It Matters

When educators lose visibility into student thinking, they lose more than assessment data.

They lose opportunities to identify misconceptions before they become larger problems. They lose insight into how students are approaching challenges. They lose important information about confidence, persistence, reasoning, and growth.

This affects teachers, but it also affects school leaders, counselors, intervention teams, and families.

Schools depend on accurate information to make decisions about support, placement, grading, and instruction. When the evidence becomes less clear, uncertainty grows throughout the system.

The challenge is not determining whether AI was used.

The challenge is ensuring that educators can still see enough of the learning process to understand what students know, where they are struggling, and how they need to be supported.

This shift also creates workload challenges.

Teachers are not simply redesigning assignments. Many are rebuilding units, rethinking grading practices, creating new checkpoints, and developing ways to document learning that did not exist a few years ago.

Much of this work is happening while they continue managing the daily responsibilities of teaching.

This is one reason so many educators describe AI as both helpful and exhausting at the same time.

The technology may save time in some areas, but it is also forcing schools to reconsider how learning is observed, documented, and verified.

What helps is not creating more restrictions.

What helps is creating clearer opportunities for students to show their thinking.

Teachers can begin by identifying one assignment that relies heavily on a final product and redesigning it to include process checkpoints, reflection, or explanation.

Department teams can work together to identify where student thinking is visible and where it remains hidden.

School leaders can facilitate conversations about what counts as meaningful evidence of learning across classrooms and departments.

Curriculum teams can review assessments through a simple question: Does this task help us understand what students know, or does it primarily evaluate what they produced?

None of these changes require abandoning AI.

They require creating conditions where learning remains visible.

The goal is not to return to the way things were before AI.

The goal is not to eliminate technology from classrooms.

The goal is to ensure that educators can still see student thinking clearly enough to support it.
