What Is Your AI Problem?

A Cognitive Shift Is Happening in Schools. Students' Ability to Stay With Difficulty Is Fading.

Something is happening in classrooms right now that many educators are noticing, even if they have not had the language for it yet. Students are producing cleaner work faster than before, but the work does not always show the thinking that used to happen along the way. Students are finishing the assignment, submitting complete responses, and in many cases earning acceptable grades. But something important inside the learning process is missing.

The skill at risk is the ability to stay with difficulty long enough for understanding to develop.

Writing is not only an output task. It is a thinking process that happens to leave evidence on the page. The student staring at a blank screen is not always wasting time. They may be searching for what they believe. The student revising a paragraph for the third time is not simply fixing sentences. They may be discovering that their argument has a gap. The moment when a sentence finally says what a student has been trying to say is not only a writing moment. It is a thinking moment.

That struggle matters.

AI makes that struggle optional. Not because it does the work poorly. Because it often does the work well enough for students to move around the thinking instead of through it.

A high school English teacher assigns a personal essay. Several students submit polished work within an hour. The writing is organized, clear, and structurally sound, but it feels strangely flat. The teacher cannot prove AI use because nothing is copied. The essays are generated from a prompt, not borrowed from a source. The teacher reads them and senses that something is missing. What is missing is the student’s thinking.

A middle school science teacher assigns a lab report. Students spend forty minutes completing the experiment and four minutes producing the write-up. The observations section reads like a textbook summary instead of a record of what actually happened at the lab table. The students experimented, but they did not process the experiment.

A counselor works with students on college essays and notices that drafts are arriving faster than ever, but students struggle when asked to explain their own stories out loud. The essay has language before the student has meaning. The tool helped them sound ready before they had fully made sense of the experience.

A curriculum director reviews assessments across a department. Scores appear stable. But when teachers ask students to explain their reasoning in person, the understanding is not as strong as the submitted work suggested. The grades look fine. The learning is not as clear.

A principal walks through classrooms and sees students working quietly, screens open, and assignments submitted on time. Everything looks productive. But the cognitive demand has shifted. Students are managing responses instead of developing their own thinking. The classroom looks like learning. It may not be.

This is not mainly a cheating problem. Framing it that way misses the deeper issue.

Many students are doing exactly what the assignment asked them to do. They are submitting the product. They are meeting the requirements. They are turning work in on time. The problem is that many assignments were built around the finished product because schools assumed the thinking would happen during the process.

AI has separated the product from the process.

That is the real issue.

Schools assumed that writing an essay meant developing an argument. They assumed solving a problem set meant building mathematical reasoning. They assumed writing a lab report meant making sense of observations. Those assumptions held because students usually could not produce the output without doing at least some of the thinking.

Now they can.

Why It Matters

If this goes unaddressed, students may lose regular practice with the kind of difficulty that builds independent thought. The ability to sit with confusion, try again, revise, explain, and make meaning is not automatic. It develops through repeated experience.

Teachers feel this immediately. They are left trying to determine whether polished work reflects understanding or access to a tool. That uncertainty adds weight to grading, feedback, planning, and student conversations.

Leaders feel it too. If the school response focuses only on detection, the deeper instructional issue remains untouched. Detection may tell a teacher that AI was involved. It does not tell the school whether the assignment still gives students a reason to think.

The answer is not more suspicion.

The answer is better evidence of thinking.

Classroom teachers can review one current assignment and ask a simple question: Can a student complete this successfully without doing the thinking I need them to do? If the answer is yes, the task needs to change. Add checkpoints where students explain what they tried, what changed, what confused them, and why their final response makes sense.

School leaders can use one faculty meeting this month to shift the conversation from AI detection to assignment design. Ask teachers to bring one task that feels vulnerable to AI and revise it together so the thinking becomes visible before the final product is submitted.

Curriculum teams can identify one major assessment in each course and examine whether it measures understanding or completion. If students can pass without explaining their reasoning, the assessment does not give teachers enough information.

Counselors and support staff can listen for the gap between polished student language and authentic student understanding. When students cannot explain their own writing, goals, or reflections, the issue may not be dishonesty. The issue may be that the thinking was never fully theirs.

The skill AI is weakening is not writing, math, or science by itself. It is the willingness and ability to stay inside a hard task long enough for understanding to develop.

That skill has no shortcut.

It cannot be generated.

It can only be practiced.

AI can support learning, but it cannot replace the part of learning that happens when students struggle, revise, explain, and finally understand something for themselves. Schools do not have to reject AI to protect that process. They do have to design for it more intentionally than before.
